Heritage Site: Descent of the Ganges


Popularly known The Arjuna’s Penance, it is a monument created by a giant open-sir rock relief carved on two monolithic rock boulders which depicts the story of the descent of the sacred river Ganges to earth by the command of Shiva with the event being watched by other Gods, Goddesses and others. Developed during the Pallava Dynasty it is located in Mahabalipuram, Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu and is extremely close to the metropolitan city of Chennai.
